Does taking the garbage out and cleaning the toilets part of the teacher's duties?
If not can we take legal action against the school for pushing such extra work on teachers?

It's legal to ask, but you can (and probably should)say no. You are paid to teach, not be janitors! I would talk to the school board and superintendent. I've heard of cut backs, but that's ridiculous! Are they going to have the students do it next? I bet the parents would have a problem with that.

Jane...do you clean the toilets and empty the trash at your job? I doubt it. Making teachers do these things doesn't build character, it demeans the teachers so that students respect them less.

What kind of school are you in? Were you told it was part of your duties when you signed on as a teacher?
I doubt it's illegal but you should talk to your union representative about it...they will most likely have a lot to say on the subject.

If you are in a preschool then that is a normal duty.

You could probably contact OSHA or the board of health about cleaning toilets. As for the trash, what's wrong with taking pride in your classroom? My windows haven't been washed for years and now that spring's coming I think I'm going to have to get the windex out myself...

It's definately not in the job description, and you should take legal action, but you might as well quit, because I can't imagine going back to work for people you took to court.

No it replaced into no longer correct for a instructor to attempt this to you. tell your dad and mom and performance that instructor suggested. don't be afraid or bypass for your counselor or the imperative of the school everyone in authority should be able that could actually help you with this problem. That instructor should be fired.

I would defiantly look in my contract to see the duties I need to perform.

Yeah, and ask the president if he wouldn't mind mopping the floor before he heads out.

I'm wondering if teachers contracts and their unions have something about that, I'm figuring they do.
Don't schools generally have custodians?

i dont necessarily think it is a teacher's duty, but taking the trash out and cleaning toilets never killed anyone. think of how much money the school is saving on janitors. that money can go towards supplies and other things for the school. clean up, it will build character!

If their contract says that they are supposed to, then it is legal. If it is not stipulated in the contract, then they are being exploited.
