Truman.

He had the balls to use the nukes on Japan and end the war without another bloody invasion of an enemy nation. I doubt any other Democrat in history would have had that kind of courage.

He made the decision of going with the NAVY idea of using nukes as a deterrent rather than the USAF view of using them as just bigger, better bombs. He saw the danger of the nukes before the results were in from Japan as to the radiation issues.

He showed the world that the USSR would not be allowed to spread Communism around the world by quick intervention in Korea.

He started the idea of the Pacific as being an "American lake" with our bases on the far side of the ocean rather than on our side of the ocean.

He also started the idea of "containment" of the USSR with strong allies around it.

The only down side is Truman set the policy of the USA not winning wars, settling for a draw in Korea, an event we are still having to deal with 50 years later.

3 term FDR...I really don't have anything against Reagan...he's about #3 or 4...but he really isn't in Roosevelt's league...Reagan was the Great Delegator...FDR was an extremely intelligent man who knew the working of government and military and who knew how to motivate the country into something great...he was a leader who actually led. He led us out of a disasterous depression caused by Hoover and died leading us out of WW2. Hoover was another "trickle down" econonmist...it nearly destroyed the working class and FDR created jobs to create a middle, not unlike Clinton. If someone hates Clinton, he hates him because of issues unrelated to his actions as president, because the man actually improved the economy and the middle class...the present issues are the problems with trickle down economics...the money doesn't make its way into the pockets of the middle class and they don't buy cars and refrigerators...right now I'd invest in soap, 'cause everybody needs it.

I think FDR... to go from a depression, through an attack (Pearl Harbor) then through one of the bloodiest wars ever (WWII) and to come out on the other side of all of that as a superpower... when you can't even really walk!

pretty crazy if you ask me... even though I didn't agree with everything he did... it's hard to argue with the results...
