He seems to have cut himself off from me, while he claims he needs to fix this problem on his own. The distance is really bothering me, because he has always confided in me when something is wrong. But in this case I just don't know what to do because he won't open up.

The best thing that you can do is just be a friend. Let him know that when /if he needs anything from you......he knows where to find you. Other than that being pushy or anything is just going to push him farther away.
Maybe invite him out for a beer and some pool....something to get his mind off his troubles and dont bring up his problems. Just talk about nothing......guy stuff. I am guessing you are a guy.......sorry IF I am wrong.
