Key difference. Ellis was married.
Also Meredith is only in Seattle because her mother was in a sanitarium there. If not for that Meredith could be in practice anywhere.
And, I don't remember anyone saying that Ellis was ever an alcoholic who liked sleeping around with total strangers.
Yes, Meredith called her a whore but that was only because her mother was telling her how good Richard was in bed.
She also told Meredith that her father never wanted her and that is what broke her up.
Richard said he would not let his girl die when Meredith was on the hospital gurney.
Perhaps she is like her father.

He's not good with family, not one to clean up after himself, can't sew his own button on his shirt, dyes his hair for the ladies, and he broke up with her mother over Meredith. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......

Oh yeah, it is obvious she did many things to gain her mother's approval and has issues because of it.
