I know this guy who doodles constantly, but the disturbing thing is, he's always signing his name repeatedly on scraps of paper. Is he a narcissist, in the truest sense of the word? He seems very nice, but at the same time I kind of get the feeling it's jsut an act.

Interesting word, narcissist, but I don't think the reason lies in that description. It is only a mere cry for desperation that impulses someone to repeat the same thing all over again.

A person’s signature displays how one wants to be perceived by the public. By “practicing” one’s signature, this could denote that the person is unsatisfied with his or her public image and wants to change it. Also, when one writes their name over and over, they are subconsciously trying to figure themselves out or have something about themselves that is troubling them. As a final note, when using what is called Grapho-therapy, when one consciously makes positive changes in handwriting, this will in turn positively change one’s life; this person may be writing his name over and over to do this. I don't think he's a narcissist, just an egocentric. He doesn't act like only he deserves the best, right? Narcissists are more radical.

He sounds self-centered but deep down, insecure. I read somewhere that a person that doodles their own name does it as a subconscious ego boost.

Maybe his name is just really fun to write. Maybe he's just really bored. Maybe he hasn't really figured out what his signature looks like, so he's trying to sort that out before he has to sign any legal documents.
