Apparently (according to some users) the Police don't take harassment seriously but I'll advise you anyway.
As another user said, you have to keep a diary of all the incidents as far as you can. Keep all of the evidence such as phone call logs, times dates etc, text messages and then report it to the police. You should get some action under the protection from harassment act 1997 if it falls into the correct definition of the offence. Harassment is defined, in simple terms, as a course of action, which is unwanted by the victim.
However, in order to advise you further, you really need to be more specific about what exactly is happening as there could be other or more relevant offences, which could be dealt with in a different way.
As for the Police not helping, there is no reason why they shouldn't provided the correct information is given by the victim but bear in mind that it is the victim that has to make the report and be prepared to go to Court if necessary.
In my experience, most cases are usually resolved with a 'first harassment warning’, which is basically telling the perpetrator that their actions are unwanted and if they continue they will be arrested.
A statement would have to be made about all the incidents initially before the warning is given, in most cases. Then if the behaviour continues, a second statement would have to be made, detailing that a first harassment warning has been given and details of the continuing behaviour. The perpetrator could then be arrested and convicted if the evidence is there and the Crown prosecution service make the decision to charge and the Courts make the conviction.
Bear in mind though that the victim has to see it through.
This sort of thing certainly doesn't get swept under the carpet where I work and I myself have 2 such incidents to deal with at present. I have also previously convicted people of the offence so the system does work.
Good luck.

I don't know the background of this problem. What I do know is that if you get out an injunction (I am assuming there is not one) against the ex boy friend then the Police will arrest him if he continues. This sort of situation is always difficult to police. You don't say what sort of harassment - phone/email/physical or in person. The best first step is to change your phone, change your email, stay away from where he is likely to be and do not, under any circumstances speak to him or in any other way give him the opportunity. If none of this works, get the injunction and log every time harrassment takes place as well as ringing the police and getting a crime no at the same time. I hope this is helpful and I hope it will stop. Unfortunately there are the odd few who are just complete nutters and don't care. Even the police have few powers against those. All the best in your struggle.

The police in the UK are nearly useless.
We have a system where abusers have free reign up until they commit their act...then they are protected by an out dated judicial system that will only find them guilty when there is no choice and will allow them to kill, maim, murder and destroy with impunity.
The alternative is to take the law into your own hands. If you do this...the police will turn up in about 15 seconds and make sure you never see the light of day again.
The police are just another branch of the system that automatically abuses the population with no responsibility to answer for their actions.
Give up!...buy a gun...I have!

If you aren't happy with what the Police have done and genuinely think they should do more contact the Police again and ask to speak to the local Inspector, it's his job to make sure you get the service you deserve. Don't sit there getting angry, do something about it.

it depends on the threats... is there any evidence that the police can act on, such as a recorded 'phone message making threats.
Are there any witnesses who can stand up and be counted and tell the police what's happening?
The police should at least be able to ask her ex what he's been doing...

Pathetic ain't they. Has your sons girlfriend tried to get an injunction out on the ex? You could try and obtain one from your local County Court, if not I agree with the other answerer to keep phoning the old bill everytime something happens. If you have an injunction on him it might make the old bill sit up and nick him for breaching it.
Hope everything works out for her.

that's the UK police for you they would rather concentrate on petty crimes than the serious ones i would keep bugging the police harassment is harassment and the police have to take it seriously if they don't write a letter to the chief constable for your county and complain as he will take it seriously good luck and hope this gets sorted out

I think because it's an evidence issue - I would advise her to keep a diary of the goings on, record phonecalls etc, then go back when she has some evidence, they can't dispute it then can they?
