For those BWM owners, is premium gas required or just recommended? Does it significantly impact performance/mileage by using a lesser grade?

Premium Gas is required. Using a lower octaned gas will cause your cars performance to go down, requiring you to use more gas to maintain acceleration and driving speeds, therefore putting your mileage down. Also using a lower grade gas in your BMW can slowly start to destroy your engine, causing the car to idle at a higher RPM, which will ruin that nice smooth BMW driving experience.

I have a 330i and have also heard that you can run at lower octane but you won't get the performance. I can also tell the diff. I'll change it up between mid-grade and premium. My car has never knocked.

I had heard that 330's will adjust based on octane.

Question is-- what year, model, engine to you have?

Required, if you don't put the highest octane, the engine will knock.
