Anne Bradstreet, if you don't know her background, was a Puritan, meaning she shunned material wealth. From what I know of her other poems, she believed that earthly wealth meant nothing because all she valued was in heaven or in her husband and family. Basically, I think she believes like any Puritan that material wealth corrupts the mind, and life should be as simple as possible to better appreciate God.
