I know that there are hundreds of these questions on here, but I just have to ask this...

When you receive an epidural, can you still feel pain during pushing? I've heard it's different for everyone, but I would love nothing more than to be heavily drug induced and pain free during the delivery (labor pains are okay, though). How did the epidural work for you?

I understand that it's going to hurt... but I want to know about what other women experienced.

If the epidural is working perfectly you should only feel pressure during pushing not actual pain.

With my first child the epidural was like heaven and it even made my labor progress faster because I was able to relax. With my second child I had one small spot that did not get numb, so it was not quite as good as the first time. With my third child my arms and chest started getting numb which made the nurse very nervous so she turned it off. By the time the doctor came to turn it back on I was already in transition and it was too late for it to work. So you see that even with the same person it can be different from one birth to the next. But if I am blessed with another child I will most definitely get another epidural! Especially after experiencing delivery without it. Best of luck to you!

I received my epidural at 3 cm and it was great. When I got to 10 cm I could tell because all of the sudden I started feeling more pain. I felt everything from then on. Thank God I only had to push like 3 times and it was over. So my epidural did work, it worked great until the very end, which I assume is normal so you can properly push your baby out. Good Luck!

My epidural was great. Once I got it at 4cm I went to 10 in a hour. During pushing I never felt any pain, just pressure. Having the epidural didn't make it hard for me to push, 30 minutes and my son was born. I will have another one with our next child.

i felt the pushing a little, they turn down the epidural when it is time to push, but i am a fan of the epidural! what hurt the most for me was when they were sewing up where i had torn, but they gave me the baby half way thru the process and i forgot all about the pain! good luck!

After my epidural I didn't feel anything but a pleasant warm feeling in my legs. I pushed well even though I couldn't feel the contractions. I'd get another epidural in a heartbeat.

I had an epidural with my first and after I got it I didn't feel anything. Also right before you get it your pain subsides a little because your brain knows it is coming and naturally rleases endorphines. My problem was i was at a hospital where they didn't have an anasthesiologist on duty he had to be called in so i had to wait until I was 8 centimeters dialated. You can request it at 5 centimeters so try to plan to have your baby at a hospital where there be one there.

With all of my pregnancies (4, the last one was twins) my epidurals didn't work at all other than giving my feet a pins and needles sensation. So in my case, yes I felt pain. Some people aren't prepared for the epi not working. Keep that in mind and find other ways to cope just in case.

I tried telling the docs that they didn't work and finally with my last one I told him that I didn't even want to try, but he pretty much insisted since I was preg. with twins just in case of a c-section. My first I had to be put under for a c-section b/c after 9 tries and 5 tries of the spinal it still didn't work.

Not trying to scare you, just prepare you just in case. Good luck!
