Molarity

2007-03-13 11:38:15 · answer #1 · answered by Lilly26 3 · 0 0

The M means "molar"...and it's a way to express the concentration of a compound in solution:

A "Mole" is Avagadro's number of atoms or ions, and a "Molar solution" contains that number of molecules dissolved in 1 litre of solution.

so a 0.5M solution of NaCl would be a solution containing half as much per litre:

[(6.02 x 10^23 Na ions and 6.02 x 10^23)/2] per liter

Though this might be clearer!......:

M stands for Molarity which would be the grams of NaCl equal to the molecular weight divided by two per liter in this case.

It means molar. That means that for every liter of solution, there is 0.5 moles of sodium ion and chlorine ion present.
