Listening involves comprehension, which requires paying attention.

Kids learn differently, so you my try having them coloring a picture of the concepts you are teaching--if your students are 3-year olds.

Also, some younger kids learn through music, so you could teach them a song about the concepts you are teaching. This is why the "ABC" song is so effective.

Finally, you must remember that pre-school kids are learning to learn. Listening skills is a skill that must be practiced.

Good Luck....

At this young of an age, explaining won't do any good. I teach piano lessons for a living and the best way to get them to listen, do their assignments, etc. is to offer some sort of motivation (basically bribe them without letting them feel like the reward is a right). Offering a special treat to those who pay attention will usually make them competitive. I recommend tootsie rolls or something simple.

hearing is a physiological process, while listening is a psychological process. these kids are only three though, just stay calm. three year olds aren't going to pay much attention when there is an entire classroom full of them. i have a four year old, and she acts like she doesnt remember what i've told her. you will be amazed at what your students actually do remember and dont let you know it. try some fun game or quiz about what you taught them that is at their level and see what they remember.

All I know is that it is hard to make a 3-year-old listen to you for more than 10 minutes. They just can't focus any longer. It's also true that they need to listen to sth more than once in order to remember it.
You just have to repeat everything again and again. Be patient. Try not to let them see that you're stressed and unsure. Did you try games, songs, or puppets?

Keep CALM!
