Hi Kal,
It is really hard for children to make a go of it when they are starting out. Child actors like McCulkin and Brittney, they are some of the more fortunate or (mis-fortunate) ones that happen to make it. For everyone that is picked there are tens of thousands that are turned down.
I would stay away from anything through the internet. Check out the yellow pages in your phone book under "Talent agencies" A real agent will let you know what is out there for you. Be aware though that there are agents that can not be very nice and are in it for the money. An agent should not request that you spend a lot of money on photos of yourself. My daughter had an agent for years and she had some very good roles in movies and series on tv. She has done wonderful in her career. When she started with her agent she only had to spend very little around $ 20.00 for 1 photo that was taken at Sears. The 1 photo went to her agent and her agent just photocopies more in black and white as she needs them. My daughter also found her agent through the yellow pages. My daughter paid nothing to have an agent, she gives her 5% of her earnings that she makes that day.
My daughter has been in the SAG union for 7 years now, and makes good money. She doesn't have her heart set to get out to LA or anything she does the majority but not all of her filming in Toronto. When she is on set more than 2 days she had a tutor with her for being out of school.
I just really want to press on you that you do not need to put out any money to get into acting or audtions. First find a good trustworthy agent. Ask people in your town that you are from if they know of any. Your agent will direct you to open casting auditions. But the agent usually gets calls from the production company asking for a certain type of person, by age, sex, height and ability. It is from there you will get your chances. But be prepared when you are starting out you may have to get a ride to quite a distance away depending on where you live and if you are under 16 you will need one of your parents to go along with you. Or someone else that is an adult that will take responsibility of you there.
Good Luck and also check out the drama classes in your school they don't pay but the experience sure helps. Also any of your community theatres are always great to start at, lots of actors just stay at that level because it is fun and comfortable to them.

It isn't easy. If you want a free, open audition, you can do a local theatre. You can still be discovered there. Otherwise, you aren't ready for the agonizing waiting for scripts, call backs, etc. You need to start out w/ local or pay the money. Sorry.

Most child actors have an Agent or Talent Manager. If you have an acting teacher ask him or her where you can find auditions.
