A certainty is better than a hope for something better in the future.
A guarantee is better than a promise.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Better to have something in your possession than the (possibility) of having two. --Capturing a bird isn't easy, just because there are two in the bush doesn't mean you'll catch any.

The thing in question is a bird (or two). If you want to catch birds and you have one already caught, be happy; don't let that one go to try for the two in the bush. Most likely, they'll fly away from you and then you'll have none.
The moral is, don't throw away what you have to try for something you're unlikely to get.

The orig phrase is a 'bird in hand...'
Having 2 birds in a bush will not get you supper. The one in your hand is worth MORE than those who are not caught.

Having one of something now is better than maybe having 2 at some point in the future
