Charts and graphs are used in newspapers because by just looking, one can determine trends and relationships!

they are easier for everyday people to read and understand, and since they are typically some sort of statistic, they are also more believable. newspapers have to be easy to read and understand because not everyone who reads the paper has a doctorate!
