OK lets look at the facts. Right now Sony sucks as a system because its new. Their losing a lot of exclusive titles that they once lay claim to. Sony is saying that their not losing money but then why on the European console would they remove the back-wards compatibility chip and use software instead? Thats because they need to make money they lost in the U.S. Also why would you demote the man that has built the Play-station Empire and put 2 software developers in his spot, thats like taking a king off his thrown and putting a street bum with no intelligence on it. My how people forget the many failures of the Sony corp. Like Beta Vs. VHS who won daha... VHS well how about the mini-disk thats long gone, then their answer to mp3 was ATRAC ...Failed. and there was Sony Dynamic Digital Sound Vs. Dolby Digital 5.1 and the winner is Dolby Digital 5.1 not Sony. Also memory sticks are another failure of Sony, replaced by micro-SD, now only used on PSP And so this brings me to Blu Vs. HD well both nice but this all boils down to a price war as has all Sony products. The problem is the the cheaper one always wins. HD cost less and can be afforded by the Wal-Mart shopper way before Blu can be. So I'm going HD-DVD on this one.
As for the console war that you are so fighting for. Sony will have good games but it will be sometime to wait so if you don't want to wait a year later then a 360 you must have. 360 has lots of fun things like Xbox live and achievements to brag about to all your friends and show them who's the man. I love this thing the arcade games are cool and has a much smoother interface and good to the eye. This system is still geared to the US and Europe only with a large first person & third person shooter library. PS3 may be free but thats it dual and plain and all you really get is Multi-player action thats it. I would love to have a PS3 just not now and not for $699 and with the little choices of games now and to come most will be on both system. The other thing that bugs me is no loading tray, what happens if your game/movie gets stuck well then you lose your system up to a month. So I'm just going to wait and see if the system gets a make-over just as did the PS2 did along with the price drop and larger collection of games thats when I will buy it.

You should look at what games are supposed to be made for each one and decide from those titles what the best system is. Barring that, look at the fact that both are "supposed to be" backwards compatible, and see whether you like the games for the PS1/2 (and PSP, since the PS3 is supposed to have a connectivity feature, though dial-up users beware), or if you prefer XBOX games. For example, I've been a Final Fantasy player since FFVII came Stateside--the first one, since that title's seemed to have generated a lot of sequels--so I'm predominantly Playstation, but I also like Pokemon games (okay, laugh it up), so I'll play Nintendo when I can afford it (right now I've just got the GBA SP, and I need to replace the NDS that I fried last year, so no console games yet). Nintendo's also in my favor because they've started making FF and Mana games of late. I also like Digimon World, but since I've got the the PS1 for the first three, I'll probably get the PS2 version for DW4...unless I check on the gameplay features and storyline and whatever else and find out I like the Nintendo version of the GAME better.
Sorry I can't do better; I've always gone by the games available, and never could understand the console wars that other people always go on about. Why limit the games you can play just because you think the console itself is better? But that's how I view it, and there obviously aren't that many out there who see it that way, with how popular the console wars are.
As to BluRay vs HDDVD...haven't done much research yet on that one, though I did come up with a site that supposedly compares them--'supposedly' because they might be biased in favor of one or the other to begin with, so it's hard to say if it's quite what you're looking for.
Oh, and you should also look at price--price of the console, price of any accessories you'd be interested in and what types of accessories might be made, and price of the games themselves.
And gg noob? "Little kids' games" for Nintendo is a stereotype, too.

From what I understand blu-ray and hd dvd are interchangeable, meaning you will be able to play either dvd on either system. So it wouldn't really matter if you bought the ps3 or the 360.

Pros of XBOX360:
Good,robust online service.
Better games.
SLIGHTLY (probably not even noticeable) better graphics
6 million people are subscribed to xbox live (heres your proof:http://www.gamespot.com/news/6166851.html?q=xbox%20live%206%20million)so theres always people to play on pretty much every game, almost never a lack of players.
$300 cheaper than ps3 and other stuff
CONS of xbox360:
xbox live is not free. either $5 a month for 10 months and 2 months (any 2 months u choose) free or $50 a year
other things im having trouble thinking of
PROS of ps3:
Free online service
Motion sensing for some (maybe all im not sure) games. (like if ur playing a flying game and u tilt ur controller to the right the plane will bank right)
you can surf the internet on it (i think)
some other stuff im having trouble thinking of
CONS of ps3:
HORRIBLE games
$300 more expensive then xbox360.
crappy online service (thats why its free)
TONS of other stuff im too lazy to write
PS3 sucks *** dont get it
its all about the xbox360.
BUT if u like portable gaming get the PSP that is godly its got the same power as the ps2 so its got ps2 graphics in that gameboy sized screen its awesome plus it has better games then the ps2 itself.
all in all my ratings of newer consoles and handheld systems on a scale from 1-10 (uber suckage) (sweeeet)
XBOX360:9
PS3: 4
Wii:8.5
(its totally about motion sensing, some games require so much movement u actually have to stand up to play them, more info here : http://www.wii.com you can also surf the internet, look at news, and check the weather from your Wii.
HANDHELDS
Ninendo DS: 4 (crappy games, retarded, useless touch screen that doesnt do anything exept double its size, its graphics are only about a little worse then N64 graphics.)
PSP:9(great games, the best graphics for ANY handheld EVER, and u can play it online like ps2/ps3 online.)
yeah.
NOTE: MUST READ!
XBOX360 DOES NOT HAVE CRAPPY GAMES. DO NOT, I MEAN DO NOT, LISTEN TO THE IDIOTS THAT SAY IT DO. THIS IS A TYPICAL STEREOTYPE THAT HAS COME AROUND SINCE THE RELEASE OF HALO, IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHAT KINDS OF GENRES YOU LIKE. IF YOU LIKE SHOOTERS, XBOX DEFINATELY FOR YOU.
IF YOU LIKE RPGS AND RACING AND STUFF THEN PS3. IF YOU LIKE LITTLE KID GAMES WII IS FOR YOU.

It depends on what your looking for.
XBox360 has alot of crappy games, but if your looking for something like 'Gears of War' or something, than I suggest this.
A PS3 is alot newer, yet it can have alot of poor graphics, yet alot of great games!
I'd prefer HD, Blue Ray is rather confusing [In my case] but they are about the same thing.
