When you are a kid it is not a thing but an event or a time period. Like being knocked out--you are not really asleep--just a limbo time between truly awake times. Yet, we think of both of these as things instead of phases. We grasp our 'childhood' as though it were an object we can hold onto.
hope that helps!

Is it any simpler?
