I may regret asking this but I recently had this discution with a friend and I am curious as to where most people stand. If they do, what? How much? Only desendents of slave owners and traders? Or all?

Do not forget that many Africans were sold into slavery by other Africans from warring tribes. It seems a little short sighted to try and place blame on a *race* for what happened 200 years ago, when none of the white slave owners in question are even still alive.

I would bet many would rather be African Americans living in America than still be in Africa in this day and age.

Bottom line is that you cant hold an entire race of people responsible for something that they didnt even participate in.

We should pay any former American slave $2 million.
We should pay the child of any former American slave $1 million.

Anyone else -- sorry, statute of limitations has run out, and a black man was the King of Pop in 1984. Be inspired by his example, and improve your lot in life through hard work.

Absolutely. I believe every living person who was a legal slave at the time of the civil war deserves significant compensation.

i don't believe they do. slavery happened how long ago??? i was not involved, so why should my hard earned tax money pay for it? but i do believe that maybe if the white-Americans MAYBE swallowed their pride and at least apologized even though none of us were involved (imy family never owned slaves) maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal. we just keep butting heads on the subject.

Slave traders/owners should pay them to former-slaves, other than that I don't think it's right.

Honestly, I think White people owe everyone else - everyone. But they could never pay the debt. So there's no point in trying. Most of the Blacks I know don't bring up the reparations issue. It's the Whites who do it.

I haven't asked for money, but I am curious why the Japanese got it and we haven't...

Leave me out of it. I may be white, but I'm also disabled. I guess that means I'm exempted.

there is no amount of money that can recompense Blacks for what we have endured. so they answer is no. Just get off our backs and that is reparations enough.
