i'm trying to find a book to read. i like books about things like evil geniuses (like Hannibal) and psychological thriller types (like Fight Club) and also science fiction books (not the ones about aliens, but the ones that deal with psychological factors, like in the fountain, where the character lives in 3 time periods at once)

does anyone know of a good book that falls under one of these genres?

(and preferably a fictional book, not a biography or anything)

A series that I have really liked is by P.J. Tracy, a mother daughter team. Their cast of characters is larger than most books which I really like and they are very well developed through all the books.

This is the synopsis from Amazon for the first book: "A mother-daughter writing team pens a soundly plotted thriller that fires on all cylinders. Tracy (the authors' pseudonym) seamlessly weaves together three distinct subplots converging on a Minneapolis software company, Monkeewrench, run by eclectic misfits and founded by the beautiful, bitchy, haunted Grace MacBride, an enigmatic recluse. The slaying of an elderly couple in a Wisconsin church draws Sheriff Michael Halloran and his amorous deputy, Sharon Mueller, into an investigation that brings unprecedented scrutiny to their conservative rural town. At the same time, a string of baffling murders in Minneapolis are driving homicide detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth bonkers. Then the folks at Monkeewrench figure out what's going on: a killer is staging a series of exotic murders that duplicate those in their grisly new video game, Serial Killer Detective. Desperate to prevent additional murders (the game has 20), the programmers study the victims to figure out who might be next. Meanwhile, Magozzi's investigation reveals that MacBride and her colleagues created entirely new identities for themselves years earlier, for reasons the FBI won't reveal, but which, Magozzi slowly finds, are connected to another series of murders a decade earlier in Atlanta. Tracy covers all the bases in this debut thriller: an accelerating, unpredictable plot that combines police procedural with techno-geek-speak, an array of well-drawn characters and, most importantly, witty repartee." http://www.amazon.com/Monkeewrench-P-J-Tracy/dp/045121157X/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-8903055-3724857?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173824440&sr=8-1

P.J. Tracy has a web site also that may be helpful...http://www.pjtracy.net/content/index.asp

I also like the Meredith Gentry series of Laurel K Hamilton's books. I haven't started the Anita Baker series yet. Her web site is at http://www.laurellkhamilton.org/Merry/MerryGentry.htm.

Hope you find something you like.

I just finished Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon series and I cannot praise him enough. His prose is brilliant. He writes about an Israeli assasin who is also a world famous art restorer who restores Christian art like Bellini etc. What I got from the books was not only great thrillers, but also a very insightful history of Israel - starting with the Nazi's "Final Solution". There is also a fair share of romance as Gabriel is a pretty sexy guy. The most recent one, The Messenger, was by far the best. As a person who is not Jewish, it was a good lesson for me to learn about the history of the troubles in the Middle East. Start with The Kill Artist and work your way forward. Mr. Silva is a former CNN reporter and his wife is a Today Show reporter. He is extremely knowledgeable and bright, his prose is exceptional, his stories are flawless and he is absolutely worth the read. C.

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (http://www.prestonchild.com/?fCMS=94f00be58f9226823cd7092cb5080853) have a great series of books, although it doesn't have a name of its own. Start with Relic, then Reliquary. The first is about a monster loose in the NY Museum of Natural History, and it introduces the major characters of the series. Specifically, it introduces Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast of the FBI, who is very much like Sherlock Holmes. He's an eccentric genius, but has some dark secrets. The next book is Thunderhead, which follows another character from Relic/Reliquary and introduces a new character. This is followed by Cabinet of Curiosities, which reunites most of the cast and starts showing us some of Pendergast's secrets. Like Holmes, he has his own evil genius nemesis who is on par with Professor Moriarty and who has some dastardly plans for Pendergast, among others. Pendergast is on his own for Still Life with Crows, then returns to NYC for a trilogy - Brimstone, Dance of Death and Book of the Dead, where the battle between the two men comes to a head. the books are all great thrillers.

Based on your preferences, the first book that jumps to my mind is "Wild Seed" by Octavia Butler. It is a science fiction novel, but not too far out there, and a real psychological thriller. Butler has an amazing writing style too, so it's hard to put down!
