If Josh Hamilton makes the final roster, and Homer Bailey gets a call up this season will it make the Reds playoff contenders. I think those two may be some of the missing pieces the Reds need. You know a power hitter other than Dunn (I'm not sure about Griffey just yet), and the third ace on the team. The only weak point other than that i can see is a everyday closer, which can be filled by Eddie Guardado. What do you think?

I think the Reds will contend this year. They have improved there roster and seem to be playing well in spring training.I picked them as my NL Wild card.I don't think a world series is going to happen this year but they are better then last year and they surprised many people competeing with the Cardinals last year.

Guardado will be out at least half the season, so you better hope Todd Coffey can nail down the 9th if you want your Reds to win many games this season.

I can see several weak points. Griffey's health, Dunn's batting average and fielding (and I actually like the guy, as opposed to how I feel about most of the team), SHORTSTOP, starting pitching outside of Aaron Harang (see below).

I also see one huge question mark, and that's Bronson Arroyo. Will NL hitters figure him out? If so, his numbers will be back to how they were in Boston, and that's not a good thing considering last season was his career best.

For the past 5+ seasons (not quite 6), the best part of the season for me was watching the St. Louis Cardinals finish ahead of the Reds every single year while the worst part of every year was watching the Pittsburgh Pirates finish in the cellar (and it hurt even more the seasons in which the Reds finished 5th).

It pains me to admit that the NL Central is a 5-team race at this moment in time, with only Pittsburgh being out. Grapefruit League decisions have to be handled carefully, as the question regarding Bailey is one of whether calling him up too early would irrevokably demolish his hopes of having a good MLB career. Does ownership try to win now, or do they hold off for one more season? Either way, look for Bailey to be a September call-up (if not sooner). Hamilton's situation is different because, if he doesn't make the opening day roster, he goes back to Tampa.

Unfortunately you can't expect to contend this year. The Cards and Cubs are both too strong and the Brewers could put it together if everyone stays healthy. If Cincy is second or third in the division consider it a success and hold out hope for next year.

I don't think the Reds have a realistic shot this year. However, if they made the decision to somehow trade for David Wright, Johan Santana, Albert Pujols, Chase Utley and Roy Halladay their chances would greatly improve! :-)

Alot of decisions will be made in spring training, but ones that will effect your playoff push will happen in the last two months.
