Twelve may be considered a bit young for a babysitter for most parents. As a parent myself, I would hesitate using someone under 14 unless I was in a bind or knew the person very well. To help yourself, take a Red Cross course in infant/child CPR and first aid. If your mom's friends don't have kids, try other people that know you as a responsible young woman. Once you get the first couple of jobs, you will probably start getting more work than you can handle.

My daughter took a babysitting course when she was 12, and it gave people a lot of confidence in her abilities, and she got lots of jobs, for instance, she looked after a little boy every day after school until his mom came home from work. She took her course as a community education course at the school, I believe other places like the YMCA also offer them. She really learned how to handle all types of situations, and she had confidence in her own abilities. When she first started to babysit, I always made myself available in case she needed me.
Post a note at the grocery store or at the school, lots of people need good babysitters.
Good luck.
