Because there were a handful of cases of madcow (BSE) in a few cattle about 5 years ago. Mind you people never mention that the feed that the cattle apparently received the disease from was from the US, so its really probably just a ploy to stop importing the beef from another country and to buy American.

Just like any imported item, the farmers are wanting the beef labeled as well. How many items have you seen that says 'Made in China' or Mexico, or Tawain, etc.?
American farmers like most other American business owners feel that their product is of better quality than that being imported. Therefore if you have a store (Krogers, Albertson's, Randels, etc) that purchase both American produced beef and imported beef how would you (the consumer) know that the 'lesser quality' product was not from the American farmers?
Here's another example, let's say theres a tool producer in Japan that stamps the name Craftmen Tools on their tools but no 'Made In Japan' label. These tools are then sold in a mix bin with American made Craftman Tools. How could you tell the difference between the lifetime guaranteed tools from the American Craftsman Tool from the imported ones?
The farmers are only wanting a fair 'playing field'.
Hope this answers the question.

As a cattle rancher my self. I for one dont like candian beef in the usa.. For one it drives the cattle that are born in the usa down. The reason why is because the buyers are getting there cattle cheep up in canada. Candadian cattle have mad cows. If we ever get it the whole market would be worthless in the usa. If its labeled they can tell exactly it came from out the country not some farm that in the usa. The canadians might have fit not getting there beef to the usa but so what .. WHo is more important the usa beef producer or some cow with mad cow ? To me support the usa beef producer..
