Hmm, if your looking for upbeat songs, Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake have some good ones. Bright Eyes is good too, but their songs are more mellow. Oh yeah, and you can't go wrong with The Cure :)
If your looking for specific songs:

Sell Out- Reel Big Fish
Infected-Bad Religion
The First Day Of My Life-Bright Eyes
Everything Goes Numb-Streetlight Manifesto
Close To Me-The Cure
My Favorite Accident- Motion City Soundtrack

PROBLEM: Your question is too general and I know too much about music songs, music artists, music history, etc. Oh, what the heck. Not country? Let's see. How about "Rocket" by Def Leppard.

I'm Old School! I'm liking Sarah McLaughlan or Train. Some along those lines. (Lyric Driven)

Karen Carpenter had a lovely voice. Mozart is always good. Steely Dan is good.
