Can someone elaborate on how these gadgets propel themselves? I've read that some use a belt whereas others use a gearbox. Do the self propelled wheels turn independently (eg. Is it possible to bind one wheel, preventing it from rotating, while keeping the other moving?)

Note: I don't actually own a self propelled mower that has a problem... I'm building a robotic mower and have just been looking for a simple way to steer the thing -- ie. by binding a wheel I would like the other wheel to continue moving, causing the mower to spin/change direction.

In all the self propelled mowers we work on, a belt transfers the power to some kind of gear shift mechanism (i.e. Snappers dick drive system) or directly to a gearbox. Lets deal with directly to the gearbox. In this system, a lever is pulled and it rotates the gearbox which places tension onto the belt from the engine. In the gearbox, the gears are allowed to slip if one wheel is going faster then the wheel being driven. Hence the wheels are not independent.

It is as you have said. Some use a gear box while others use a belt system. Some drive the rear wheels some the front. Either way, whichever wheels are driving the mower, they are tied together with an axle and drive the mower with both wheels.

Why would you want to mess with a wheel?
Self propel models have a bar that pulls a cable that engages the gears that drives the blade and the mower.

yes, that would most likely be a stripped gear, look for debris caught in the stuck wheel, with the mower off preferably

As soon as the air leaves the anus, it causes the lawn mower to speed up and emit an unusual smell
