The Renaissance artists were mainly humanistic people who started taking credit for their own work (as oppossed to not doing so in the Middle ages). However, many paintings during this time portrayed God or Jesus, or Mary, Madonna, and other historic and religious figures. Many other paintings emphasized the need to study history and become a scholar.

The term "Renaissance man" means a man that qualifies in everything-- a painter, writer, musician, general, politician, and religious figure.

The people in the Renaissance became free thinkers, unrestrained by common law. They became secular and began to challenge the Catholic Church (through the Protestant reformation with Luther, Calvin, and others)

Trade erupted in the Renaissance and it eventually led to the development of tools like the compass, astrolabe, and quadrant which brought the European age of Exploration about. It was also a time of increased study of ancient societies (ancient Romans and Greeks) and also of literature (Shakespeare). The introduction of gunpowder changed the style of warfare from middle-age steel to "rebirth"-- or Renaissance --muskets and cannons

The Black Death and the 100 Years' War helped end the Middle ages and the Reformation topped it off.
