I assume you mean the American slave trade. The answer depends on your time and place. There were a lot of different laws and cultural views towards slavery in the South over a great period of time. Some salves were even paid, Virgina for example forced that on Slave owners. Some slaves were treated very harshly, punished with whipping, and were chained and watched 24 hours a day. Other slaves, house slaves in some areas, would be free to pretty much go where they pleased when not working and as I mentioned some were paid.

Although Wm.Wilberforce's "Abolition of Slavery Bill" was passed in the House of Commons in 1807 it did not end slavery or the slave trade. In c1830 there was an uprising of slaves on the slave island of Jamaica. The British Army put down the uprising but in so doing, and for the first time, the common British Soldier of the Common People of England, had seen for himself the absolutely appalling conditions of the slave trade. When the British Army returned to England, many of the soldiers who had been witness to what happened in Jamaica, joined what then became known as the Emancipation Movement. This ultimately lead to the Bill of Emancipation of the Slaves in the House of Commons sometime in the 1830s. It was from that point on that all slaves in the British Empire were set free.

Well if your talking about after the civil war. Well Not much they still had tons of restrictions so the whites may have said they were free but not really. They were still treated as if they were slaves.

Depends on the place and the time.
Slaves in China were completely bound to their masters. Slaves in ancient Rome ranged from the chain bound mine workers, to the armed men employed as policemen and firemen in Rome. Slaves in muslim countries ranged from chained galley rowers to castrated play things, but a characteristic feature was that many were brainwashed and employed as soldiers (Janissaries, Mameluks). They were never set free.

Male and female slaves could create families and marry each other. Gay people even now can't have that.

They had NO freedom at all.
They slept when they were told, ate when they were told, worked when they were told.
They even had to breed when they were told to & with whom so that "good breeding stock" could be assured - like they were cattle.
