It's spelled "cello." No, they aren't. A cello is tuned in perfect fifths, whereas a 3/4 bass is in fourths. A 3/4 bass is also a lot taller. A bass guitar is fretted, for the most part. Cellos and 3/4 ("stand up" or orchestral) basses aren't. You must sit to play cello, whereas you must stand to play 3/4 bass.

I used to play cello in lieu of a bass guitar by plucking the strings... it had a nice range. :)

I'd suggest an electric bass guitar for a someone who wants to be in a band. There are acoustic bass guitars out there, but it's a personal preference... I'm sure there are also acoustic/electric basses, much like the acoustic/electric guitars. THE FRETS MAKE LIFE A LOT SIMPLER!!!

a cello is like a gigantic, lower sounding, sit-down violin. bass guitar is just a slightly bigger, lower sounding guitar. a bass guitar has 4 5 or 6 strings. they are also much more fun to play. you can play anything from hip hop- hard rock with a bass. the B.G. has endless possibilities!!

Cellos are tuned in 5ths, so your largest to smallest strings would be tuned G, D, A, E.

Bass is larger and tuned in 4ths, so you largest to smallest strings would be tuned E, A, D, G

Bass is lower and is generally played via bow or fingers (electric bassist can use picks, but that's if they have no class) and cellos are generally bowed.
