If the stains are from rust, try CLR or Lime Away cleaners. If this is an old toilet, the porcelin may be pitted and you will be cleaning it often. You can use the block cleaners that hang on the inside of the bowl, but do not use the ones that go inside the tank. They eat the flush valves and other mechanisms that make the toilet work. Especially the rubber seals.

If it is from iron in the water, "Barkeeprs Friend" cleanser is highly acidic and does a great job of removing this with little scrubbing on your part. Doesn't hurt the porcelain finish either. CLR can help as well (Calcium Lime and Rust removing spray.)
If the stain is of unknown or organic origin, I'd flush the bowl manually with a bucket of hot water. Then squirt in some liquid or powdered dishwasher detergent and let it soak for an hour. This stuff cleans really well without effort. Again, won't harm the porcelain finish.

There is a great product that works very fast, and all that is required of you is to squirt the contents of the bottle into the bowl and stand back. It is called "THE WORKS" and can be found at Walmart or at most dollar stores. I keep several bottles on my service truck.

Try bleach it cleans everything.Also, if you have any denture tablets,drop a couple in the bowl and let them work at it for about15 minutes...if t works on porcelain teeth,it's gotta work on toilet bowls.
