I mean... the kitchen is one thing but...

...Apparently the suicide rate of women prisoners is on the increase ...

Over 75% of women's offences are nonviolent or minor, i.e shoplifting...

More than 60% of women prisoners are mothers...

What do you think..?

Rarely does incarceration do what we want it to.
In many cases, it simply confirms the criminality
of the defendent. Yeah, people commit suicide
in jail.

I don't see that the gender of the person is the
issue. The issue is whether or not jail time
actually does what society needs it to do.

From what I've seen, it is COUNTER productive.

well, the statement "apparently" the suicide rate is higher isn't really solid proof and if that is the case they should increase suicide watch. If the offences are minor it's not like they will be doing an extremely large amount of time, plus women's prisons are somewhat different than a man's anyway. If women don't have to go to jail for shop lifting then men shouldn't have to either, that would make shoplifting pretty much legal. So what if more than 60% are mother's, look at all the father's in jail. If the people cared so much about their kids they wouldn't have broken the law in the first place. I mean come on arn't feminists fighting for equality? What a silly question.

I hope you are not suggesting that a woman with children should never be jailed for a crime that a woman without children would be. It amazes me that particularly women with children would risk prison in the first place - it shows how little they think of them. If you do a crime, you should expect punishment. Are you suggesting that if the crime is non voilent, then hell, just let them off every time. Working could be an option - instead of stealing, people can get a job perhaps - I know it sounds simple but some thieves just can't get their head around the concept. Mind you, why bother getting a jobm, stuck in an office all day when you could steal from others and get the same returns in a couple of hours. Shoplifting isn't minor to companies being ripped off by thieves or people who work extremely had only to have some scumb bag steal of them.

Simon Simon I've been thinking
What a great world this would be
If all the [insert the sex of your choice here] were transported
Far beyond the deep blue sea...

The punishment should fit the crime.

How much time did Winona Ryder serve for her shoplifting?

What percentage of male prisoners are fathers...oh yeah, many men don't take responsibility after the pleasure is over, so no way to accurately measure how many are fathers...

It takes more than passin' on the genes to be a parent.
I'd rather be a ward of the state than have a parent who would raise me to be a criminal.

As the saying goes 'don't do the crime if you can't do the time'...
Maybe nonviolent or minor - however say they mug an old lady/steal someone's mobile - think of the victim!!
This would effect the victim!!!
Just because they are mother they should not be given any special treatment - after all they didn't think about their kids when they did the crime. I know that is a broad and sweeping statement but maybe a lot of men in jail are father's?

It is evident that far more women prisoners are mothers than male prisoners - almost 100 per cent more in fact. More than 60 per cent of women prisoners are mothers........and? What percentage of men's offences are nonviolent or minor, you don't say. I think women should be locked up if their crimes appropriate to that. If they are mothers, tough. Maybe their kids are better off without them.

If the punishment for the crime is incarceration, then yes - being a woman shouldn't be a reason for different treatment.

And perhaps if those prisoners who are mothers (and fathers too) gave a higher priority to their responsibilities rather than any criminal activities then they wouldn't be in the position of being locked up in the first place.

Women have always been discriminated against and it has become normal within all societies. It is common to hear complaints about the way muslim societies treat women, but the western world is no better.

Women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, ...have you heard all this before?...do you think it is just political correctness?...do you want to continue to treat some people less well than others?...

I would like to be a human being...not a monkey.

STOP DISCRMINATION!!!!!

Yes they should do the time if they commit the crime, they should just address the way they are held

I read a book where a women preferred to be in a Bangkok jail than a British one, she said at least you got to be out in the fresh air each day

if a women has broken a law that requires her to be locked up then she should serve the time women get a fair trail just as a man does and the court may be more lenient on women especially if the sentence is by a jury and children are involved
