5 john quincy adam He also worked tirelessly to end the so-called "gag rule," which allowed members of Congress to "table" - that is, to put aside without debate or vote - the many petitions Congress was receiving demanding that slavery be abolished. By 1836 the abolitionist movement had gained considerable strength in America, but in Congress there was still an uneasy balance of power between free states and slave states, so most members wanted to duck the issue. The gag rule gave them political cover.

Adams believed the gag rule was a violation of the constitutional right to petition, and his many impassioned speeches against both the gag rule and slavery earned him the nickname "Old Man Eloquent." Finally in 1844 he succeeded in repealing the rule. Adams was even involved in one of history's most famous slavery trials
