Levine's breakdown of census figures in a newly released report shows that 44.1% of working-age African-American men in the city had no job in 2005, down from 47.3% in the 2000 census.

They should NOT be given entitlements from the Government and should be locked up for a VERY long time if they deal drugs or steal having NEVER had an HONEST JOB. That's what I think the Gov. should do! This has GOT to stop!

I live in PGH and there are hundreds, possibly, thousands of decent jobs downtown and surrounding area; if you can read, write, and have finished HS.

So what exactly should the government be doing?

The forced education doesn't seem to help; the various vocational programs paid by the taxpayer dollar doesn't seem to help. The various urban planning and training programs, also funded by the taxpayer don't seem to be helping much either.

You can lead a person to a job but you can't make them work.

I'm a Libertarian in thought. Why SHOULD the government do anything? You do not empower anyone, black, white, or brown. They empower themselves. It is a problem, I hope it gets solved, I don't think the government should do it.

First, let's stop blaming anyone. Then lets offer addidtional educational opportunities through volunteer programs. What it all comes down to is really very simple.

Businesses exist to make money. Businesses really don't care about your color. If you can help them expand, be more efficient, make more money, they want you.

Skills. Knowledge. Behaviors.

Behaviors should lead you to persue your passion and obtain as much knowledge as you can get on that passion.

Applying that knowledge will develop your skills. Sometimes you'll fail. Sometimes you'll succeed. Always, you'll learn.

What does a business want? Skilled employees.

Armed with this knowledge, why would you want the worlds most inefficient organization, government, to deal with it?

Get involved in your community if you really want to make a difference. I do and we desperatley need more of you and less of the government.

The government has done everything possible to help them. Education is free through the 12th grade. I can't help it if they don't take advantage. Affirmative action sets up a racial spoils system that gives them advantage. Look How in the world can government make their mothers marry their fathers and provide the home life needed to succeed in America. How can the government force them to go to school, how can the government stop them from being criminal, how can the government teach them standard English needed to get high paying jobs, how can the government stop them from taking drugs. These people are not unemployed they are unemployable. There will never be an equality of outcome in a free society.

And why would this be a concern or issue for the government to solve? If you had given statistics for unemployment across the board in America, I might lend an ear. But when I hear the concerns are for black males...I lose interest. Not because I am racist at all...in fact, just the opposite. But I think we need to be looking beyond colour when solving problems - and stop making exceptions for specific groups.

Because they keep thinking they are being held down by "the man", the white man to be specific. The smart ones realize this is america and anything is possible and end up being rich and successfull, the rest sell crack, become alcoholics, never leave the ghetto etc, and from that point on their family and each proceeding generation is now part of a viciouse cycle.

I think the government is already doing to much with affirmative action, if there arent enough black people ina particular company they have to hire someone who is black over me because I am white. Its reverse racism and its evil.

Why is it illegal Mexicans can come here and not speak a lick of English and find a job while the native born Black American can not find a job?

Simple. Willing to work vs NOT willing to work. There are jobs out there, the Black males who do not have jobs are too lazy to find them.

Look up Bill Cosby commits in the New Times May 29, 2005. He puts the blame back on the black parents. Not on whites or society.

I thought we were all born with the same opportunities and it was a question of laziness or ambition? Now it's the government's job to fix this? Doesn't the GOP believe in LESS intrusion in our lives?

so... throw them all in jail is your answer?

DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THAT COSTS?

quite a bit more than welfare... but you don't really care about how much money you spend... do you? and throwing them in jail... SOLVES NOTHING... they get out eventualy and just end up going back to jail again... and your taxes going up even more to pay for them...

I think it has a lot to do with education... ever been to an inner city school?

you don't learn, you don't get a good job... teach a man to fish...

does any Republican have any actual ideas that could actually help?

Unemployment is at it's lowest in history. What so you reasonably expect the government to do. The best way to decrease unemployment is to make it harder to eat at public expense. If you get hungry enough then you will do anything even work.
