when i play a c chord on the guitar, it sounds awful, i also need help with the other chords

z said it right...also, try tuning your guitar to a piano/keyboard (if you are tuning to the standard tuning). If it still doesn't sound quite right, it may be the guitar itself and not you that is the problem. Different things can influence the intonation of a guitar, like the "action" (how high above the neck the strings are) and slight bending of the neck over time. You could try taking it to a music store and having someone glance at it. Another approach would be to add a Chorus effect to your guitar. If you're playing an electric, you can get a pedal for as cheap as around $20 or so. In addition, how hard you press the strings when playing will also effect the intonation. The harder you press on the strings, the higher the note will sound.

Make sure your fingers are on the right strings/frets. Also make sure that your guitar is in tune. Tune it by ear here:
