In India the Rajputs are mainly Hindus of the warrior caste; traditionally they have put great value on etiquette and the military virtues and take great pride in their ancestry. SINGHs are also a division of Rajputs in India, apart from Sikh Singhs who are also considered great warriors. These people are very famous for their courage, valor and often they are consider to LION for their activities.
So SINGH is an ancient Indian Vedic name meaning "Lion", dating back over 2000 years old to ancient India. It is mainly used by Sikhs, Rajputs, etc.
In sikh community Singh is used as a middle name after the given name and followed by the caste/clan/family name. For example, "Balraj Singh Khuman", "Kartar Singh Virk", "Natwar Singh Gujjar", "Daljit Singh Khanna" etc (Pattern: 1. First name, 2. Singh, 3. family/clan name).
In the non-sikh communities Singh is used after the given name and Singh as the surname. For example, "Jaspal Singh", "Kishan Singh", "Raghubir Singh", "Mohan Singh" etc. ..

That is not true.
Singh was a name of high cast.
To break the cast system, and to show how we are all one. Our 10th Guru named everyone Singh. Before the guru ji, only Sing's went to battle. But our Guru changed it so not only men can go to war, but women can do that if they please.
True Sikh's don't believe in the cast system.
Hindu's believe Singh is one of the Highest cast.
Lastly.
I am Sikh. My first name is Harjinder, Last name is Singh. In reality if we get holly water (Amrit) then we will have a last name of Khalsa. Never any other name.
So true Sikh's name is always. first name, Singh, Khalsa. No cast name at all. There are some sikhs that don't fallow that rule. BUT a true sikh will always fallow that rule.
