I had a cervical exam last Tuesday, Saturday, and Monday, and again today. On Tuesday and today it was by my doctor whom is a male, and the other two times were lady nurses at the hospital. My doctor said I was a 1 cm and 50% eff., on Sat I was told I was 2cm, and 70%, and on Monday I was 3cm and 80% eff. Well I went to my doc again today, and he said I am still a 1cm and 50% and have not changed since last Tuesday. What is the deal?? Has this happened to anyone else? How can I not have changed when I was told lastnight I was 3 and 80? Does it have to do with hand/finger size and he would have larger hands. Who do you think I should believe.

You should listen to your doctor. Since it was HIM that said you were 1cm last Tuesday & then again-he would know if you were more dialated or the same as last time HE checked. Now it may not be that these nurses were wrong or lying to you one of two things may have happened 1) the finger size issue ect. 2) possibly you did dialate some & go back down some this (I think) only be likely if you are hopefully at least 7 months but more likely 8-9 months & your due date is still 1-5 weeks away...... Good luck & congrats!

Possibly finger-size...sounds reasonable to me.

I'd still believe the doctor.

I was induced and in labor for 15 hours...the second half of my labor, the nurse kept telling the doctor that I was soft and progressively dilating.

When the doctor came (and had to perform an emergency c-section) he said I hadn't dilated even a single cm. He was pi$$ed @ the nurse, to say the least.

I think its one of those subjective measurements where it depends on the healthcare worker carrying out the exam. To get a truly accurate picture it would need to be carried out by the same person every time. They have 'guidelines' as to what, for instance, a 50% effaced cervix feels like, so everyone will interpret this slightly differently. As you have seen the male doctor twice I would go with his version.

Yes i was told it was finger size. But it should not matter what the size of the finger is they all should be close on the estimate of size. You are not ready to give birth so do not worry when it is time you will know. So relax

That is odd and I don't think it has to do with finger size.. no matter how big your fingers are, 1 cm is 1 cm... it would have more to do with them not doing their job well. I don't know of anyone who actually closed up after dilating.. did you ask your doctor about discrepancy? I'd trust him.

I guess you are pregnant? Are you talking about your cervix dialating? If so, it does depend on finger size. That same thing happened to me when I was in labor.
