The figures for alimony are based on his income and yours and division of joint assets. If you have substantial joint assets and he gives you considerably more of them he could get out of paying support. Alimony is only for a limited number of years. The purpose for (legally mandated) alimony is to give you time to re-establish yourself, not to provide for you for life. If you and him can come to an agreement without a judge making the decision, anything is possible though. I have a friend who gets alimony until she remarries (so she lives with her boyfriend), however her ex. had this in the initial divorce proposal, he was very fair. She took it to her lawyer and he told he to sign immediately.

I do believe that if you have reason you can get alimony probably about what it would be to match his. If he is not very well off you probably won't get much. Your best bet is move on and move to a place that you can afford, maybe another state, another town and try for a better job. There is so much out there for you, you just have to try and don't stop trying. Men like him are good at only two things messing up your quality of life and making you feel so worthless you don't even want to fight anymore. But you have to be better than that or you would not have made up your mind to leave. Did you also think of a women's shelter for abused women. If you don't have kids (its too hard on them in these places) you might want to stay in one of these while you go back to school, or save up for a place to live. Look into your neighboring shelters, talk to the churches for any help. god be with you sweetie its hard but you can do it. (I did.)

If your husband has been abusive towards you and having a drinking problem you need to get out of that relationship before it gets worst!! You need to forget about alimony and get a divorce. Get out and live your life before it ends. Life is to short to be in a relationship like that. You might not have the income that you need, but it will come your way if you start setting your mind in a different direction. Get out before it gets to late to many women are getting abused by their husbands telling them they are no good, never let a man make you feel like that. You should be proud you made it thru this far..

In Ohio, you are entitled to alimony, but I'm not sure about other states. Seek advice from a lawyer & he will be able to answer this question & other questions for you.

Your husband will have to pay you alimony if you can prove that your current income will not support you and that you are not qualified to make a higher income.
