Measure the area to be fenced. set your posts first. If you are going with chainlink use the bigger diameter posts at corners and at gates. smaller dia. for in between them. set posts 8 to 10 feet apart depending on how long of a run you are doing and then cement them in. wait a cuple of days for the concrete to harden before continueing, for a wood fence nail in your rails then the pickets for chain link attach your tension bands and brace bands around the posts and to the chain link fabric stretch it tight and then attach it to the post at the other end using more brace bands then use tension wire to fasten the fabric to the line posts inbetween the corners.

Depends on what kind.
There are wooden fences, chain link fences and metal fences. I just finished building a 6ft cedar privacy fence around my house.

If you put up a wooden privacy fence you need to dig holes and set post 24 inches in concrete about every six to eight feet. Make sure your posts are plumb. You can buy hardware (about .50-.60 cents ea. at Lowes or HomeDepot) you attach to the 4x4 posts to hold the cross pieces that you will screw your pickets on to. You can use treated lumber or cedar. Cedar is more expensive. the price of pickets fluctuates 10 or 20 cents depending on the time of the season.
Use screws instead of nails.
Use a cordless drill with more than one battery if you can.
Have a family member/buddy help an extra pair of hands comes in handy.

Check with your local permit department because you may need a building permit depending on how long and what kind of fence and materials you are using
.
The link below gives instructions on how to build several different types of fences.

Main thing would be to secure the post well. (possibly in concrete) Then attach whatever type of fence you want. You might want to check with the farm supply or lumber yard where you buy the material for best instructions on installation.
