That will depend on the exact Model of your Emachine's motherboard.
The motherboard determines what CPU it will supoort.
Either check your Owner's manual, mst likely under Upgrades or go to Emachine's website and check the specifications of your Exact computer Model.

Hello,
Ok before you think about upgrading you cpu try doing these following things:
Try upgrading your RAM
Also think about Adding or Upgrading to a better HDD eg: Faster RPM.
Ok failing all of the above Download a program called
CPU-Z after you install this run it and look at the following
TAB: Mainboard
Write down all the info on this page you will need this for later.
Tab: CPU
then look at the info in the Package box.......
This should tell you your Socket number, right this down as you will need to take this to pcworld.
Or you could google your Motherboard Manufacturer and Model info and you can find out what is the highest cpu you can have.........
i hope this helps

go along with the suggestions so far, without your mobo number it will be impossible to find the max cpu it can take.
more ram is always a better boost.
to be honest, even if you can get a new cpu, the performance increase will not look very dramatic.
2.8 should handle internet and windows based progs like office etc, and if you are trying to edit videos then ram would be a bigger help.
if the problem is games, then bigger graphics card is really the only way.

your processor isn't the slowest in the world but if you do upgrade you may have to flash the bios because it may not support anything faster it'll also be expensive.
one of the best upgrades you can do for any system is increase the memory this really speeds computers up and it's cheaper than a new processor and a lot easier to fit have a look here for memory upgrades http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=COyJ16PX8ooCFQvmlAodpz34lA

possible, but honestly, your emachine probably isn't worth it. but if you are intent in doing so, i would go thru emachine as they will be able to tell you what the best cpu your board will accept.

get the model number etc off the motherboard and goto the manufacturers website, look up the model and see what the fastest cpu is. you could also look at overclocking it but be careful.
