No, a mattress on the floor turns the floor into one giant box spring. And the use of platform beds is becoming more and more popular...where there is no box spring, it is just a sheet of plywood, or an attractive equivalent...with a mattress on top. Europeans and Asians have been doing this for years...and they are historically very in touch with health issues.

I honestly don't know what is the point of a box, unless it is to raise the height of a bed, or to fit it on a frame...the steel rails that tie a footboard and headboard together, getting it off the floor, allowing storage underneath...can't hold a mattress on it because they are floppy. The mattress would just bend and fall through.

In short, I think it is more cosmetic than anything...and helps the sleeper get the bed up to a height where they can get in and out of bed without a lot of drama.

Nope. Just a matter of preference and comfort.

When you are young, you can sleep right on the floor! As you get older you desire more padding!

Some cultures sleep right on the ground or hard wood floors with only a rug or straw mat. It's all a matter of what you are used to.

no. in fact, if you fall off the bed, it will be lower, so it will hurt less :-)

Almost no mattress will cause you physical harm. The type of mattress to buy is mainly a personal preference.
