Patrick Henry was governor of Virginia from 1776 to 1779 and from 1784 to 1786. So I guess 5 years would be the best answer.

My understanding is that Patrick Henry served two different terms as Governor of Virginia: 1776—1779 and 1784—1786.

His first term as Governor was as the first Governor of the Virginia after the Declaration of independence, and so it was probably an irregular term of office. The second time he served, he was the state's sixth Governor, and so there were four other governors between 1779 and 1784, which would confirm that the terms were irregular.

If you want to know the specifics about what dates he bacame Governor and left the office (so you can determine how many months he was in that office total), you might check at the website for the Library of Virginia. (And keep in mind that Governors were not elected by a popular vote of the people at that time--they were elected by the State Legislature.)

He was governor from 1776-1779 and from 1784-1786. At the time, the governor served a 1 year term, so he served 3 then 2 years, for a total of 5.
