David Shenk has written a book (The Immortal Game) which suggests that the game between Adolph Anderssen vs. Lionel Kieseritzky played in London on June 21, 1851 might be the game you're looking for. Shenk writes: "But every once in a while, when it is least expected, a pair of players stumble into a game of true grace and beauty, danger and cunning, temptation, treachery, and surprise after surprise after surprise...they sat down for a casual game and fell into a once-in-a-lifetime event. And that unexpectedness, that surprising brilliance and beauty, is precisely what makes the Immortal Game such a great game to dissect, move by move." It was actually a game played in a pub between rounds of the official tournament the two were playing in just down the street. Here is the move list from that game. (The book is a commentary on the game move by move, but here is just the list of moves.)

The book is an excellent history of chess which covers a great deal of information for the chess enthusiast. I highly recommend it.

I also have read that the games of Capablanca are worth studying.

Good luck! I hope this helps.
