I know! I cant believe some of the names people MAKE UP for their kids! most of the time in this forum, its teen girls that are pregnant and wanting the wackiest names for their "dolls"! I hate when people don't think ahead!
I am all for unique names, but most of the time the names are flat out ridiculous!

I have a very "normal" name and was still teased and bullied in school. So no I don't think it has much to do with the name. In high school I knew several kids with unsual names, they were very popular or just left alone. Kids are kids, they will tease you for ANYTHING, and any name can become the butt of all jokes. Though something like "sundance" is a bit extensive and may aid in teaseing ... but that also depends on the child and the other kids they are around. Some may find a different name cool.

ok, I know many people wuth weird names and their life certainly hasn't been easy. their parents are usually "trying to be original" or "named them after someone".... I don't think they saw that they were doing anything wrong at the time, but some of them realized it later on and allowed their children to officially change their names (I know a girl whose name used to be "Baby"). some of the others still don't get that all their "originality" caused was trouble for the child, some of them really had nasty problems as children and they still have problems now (a gril whose name is "Svemirka"- in my language that means "An alien form space"-her life has really never been easy). I love original names, but I really can't see why anybody would do that to a child, but I guess they anted to make children special, and instead made them freaks. it can't be easy to live with a name like "Alien" or "Baby". i don't think that they don't care, maybe they cared abit too much...

A name is just a name. I agree there are some names that are way out.
I would rather name my child(ren) names you do not hear alot of then to name them a plain name like John or Jane.
Kids get bullied no matter what so what really does their name have to do with anything.
My husband said people use to make fun of his name and you know what his name is? Jeremy....Is that a strange or unusual name? NO
If people would teach their kids not to bully then kids would not be hurt by other people making fun of their name or the way they dress and so on.

The thing I struggle with is that we're in the process of adopting older kids, and some of the kids we're considering/being considered for come with the worst names, but do you change it in the interest of their future, or do you let them keep their "unique" name because "it's the only thing they have that their parents gave them"? Unfortunately, I see both sides of the issue, and depending on the child, they could resent the decision either way.

Oh yes, I hear you!
I suffered all my life because of my name. Got bullied all the time. So did my little brother. None of our older siblings had good names, either.
I used to wonder if Mom and Dad hated us. They sure did a number on us, giving us names that none of our friends had ever heard of!
When I became a mother, I gave my children the most common names that I could think of. Even made sure that their initials didn't spell anything nasty.

Apparently not . I was named after my father Walter Salter.I go by my middle name Howard as often as possible. However being teased as the kid with the funny name the first day of school wasn't all bad.It
generally got me a lot of attention, both good and bad.It also made me strong as a person as I got older. So I guess it's not who you are, but what you are!

I think it depends on the age and the social background of the parent.
I have seen some atrocious names on this site and when you have a look at the responses; going by the names and avatars on the people answering (scientific, I know) those who are young and have yahoo names like sexibabe and QTpye love 'trendy' names. Those of us who are a little older (not necessarily OLD) like more traditional names.
I for one, am never going to name my child Jenyfur instead of Jennifer. I'd prefer her to share her name with someone else, rather than being saddled with that spelling for every job interview they attend for the rest of their lives.
Incorrect spelling and trendy names only cheapen your child. Give them a strong, respectful name.

I think it's true for some parents. They want their kids to have 'trendy' names and names that nobody else would've thought of-'keeping up with the Joneses' sort of thing. I know this little boy named Roan (ro-ahn) whose parents (who are not Irish) were going for an Irish theme, and I have a distant cousin named Debin. The poor girl can't find anything personalized!

I noticed that younger parents think of the most ghetto name they can. In my family you don't dare name your kid the same name as anyone else in the family, so everyone tries to think of a different name and most of the time it not a good one.
