Closest to each other would be Earth and Venus. Farthest would be Mercury and Neptune (now that Pluto is no longer officially a planet). That is assuming the distance is measured at closest approach, since the distance is always changing due to the different orbital motions of each planet.

that all depends, is pluto still a planet in your class? if pluto is still a planet, is it inside Neptunes orbit at the moment (yes, it does do that)? are we assuming that all the planets are in a straight line?

if we are assuming that they are all in a line, then the closet two would be Venus and then Earth. the farthest two apart would be the fist and last, Mercury and Pluto (or neputne).

of course if pluto was on one side of the sun, and neptune was on the other side, they would have the biggest distance between them.

Hey AZ, what happened to Uranus? is that not a planet anymore either?

Pluto isn't a planet anymore, folks. Get over it.

Neptune and Saturn have the greatest possible separation...when they are on opposite sides of the sun.

Well, at certain times, Pluto & Uranus are the furthest apart (when they're on opposite sides of the sun). And, at times, Mercury & Venus are closest to each other.
