When I want in-depth information on any given subject, the internet just doesn't cut it for me. All I get is tid-bit information. But, if you want in-depth and varied information, the library is the place to go. Libraries aren't just about books. You can go read the latest magazines and newspapers. They have extensive book collections--very old and new. You can rent movies or audio books. They have special group meetings and if you can't read, they will help you to learn how to read. In my mind, there is nothing like the smell and feel of a real book in the hand. And if you need information and don't know how to find it, the librarian is trained to help you in ways you can't imagine.

I once saw a camera sales ad in a photograhpy magazine. I happened to remember the company name and not the address. I wanted to buy this camera lens and the price couldn't be beat. I went to the library and asked for help in finding the address of this company. The librarian went into the Reference Section, took down a book listing all the registered businesses in the the United States and this marvelous intelligent woman gave me the address of the company that sold the lense and I bought it and even with the shipping, the price couldn't be beat.

And if nothing else, the library is something of a quiet retreat where you can sit in peace and quiet. And if you want, you can use their computers.

OK, I should be able to answer this since I am a librarian-- there are different types of libraries: some function to augment the school it is in, for research, study and information needs. These days many can be accessed from home or you may go directly there. Most schools (elementary and secondary) have libraries which also function for information and research, but also add some reading for entertainment, have fiction non-fiction and reference sections and computer use as well. They may also include databases that you cannot get from the internet at home.

Then there are public libraries which offer everything I mentioned above plus the additional social segment where you can find classes, exhibits and educational programs for all ages. They can be a computer source for those who do not have one at home, so people use them for job hunting, internet searching-- and-- ugh--- some have been using it for personals. Some people meet at the library for tutoring, study groups, and my first date was at the library (in 7th grade).

I could buy all the books I read at the book store. I could rent videos. I could subscribe to all the magazines and newspapers I like to read. I could buy my own computer and pay to use fee-based online databases. If I did all these things, I wouldn't need a library. If I did all these things I would also be broke. And I still wouldn't have the one thing that I can't buy and that's the help and services of a trained librarian.

The library, if public, is a means for the population to obtain resources. Most resources are free, but some libraries charge for media. A public library is good for hobbies, academia, or research. It sometimes serves as a meeting place. The library enriches our society, is mostly free, and mostly entertaining or educational.

The library is a convenient place to find books to read if you don't want to buy them. Or if you need to do some research. Also, maybe if someone doesn't have a computer they can go to the library and use one.
It's also a nice place to sit and read a book without being disturbed.

In the not too far future, libraries will be obsolete; everyone will have a computer that has a program that has every book known; just like a library. designers should be working on that now.

I can tell you for sure that it is of no use whatever, if you have a 42 ton truck stuck in a ditch on the North Yorkshire Moors.

it's pretty simple, to study, research and have a quiet time AND NOT TALK LOUD! ONE MAJOR RULE-NEVER BE NOISY IN THE LIBRARY! this library close to my house is pretty strict, it has this guard walking around and mothers bring in their kids that make a looot of noise so the guard keeps getting angry and telling the moms to quiet down their kids.
