There aren't any regulations on it - you are not required to have any credentials in order to babysit. It might help get your more jobs if you are certified because people may trust you more.
It never hurts to be prepared.

You don't have to have it, but a lot of parents prefer it, and some will only hire sitters who know first aid & cpr. If you check with your local YMCA, rec/community center, or Red Cross, you can get training, and there are also "Safe Sitter" classes that will teach you CPR & First Aid, and a lot of other things that will help you out with babysitting jobs.

It is always best to have the most credentials when job searching. A CPR/First Aid class is probably free through yoru local YMCA, and would benefit you. If you can't take one, expect parents to ask you what you would do in emergency situations. You may even want to purchase a first aid kit and tell parents that you carry that with you as part of your "babysitting" kit.

It would be a good idea to have the training, and it would definitely make you more marketable to advertise yourself as a "first aid/CPR certified child care provider"

If there were a bunch of babysitters to pick from I wouldn't necessarily pick the one that knew first-aid and CPR if my kids didn't like her or she was mean to them. But if my kids liked her then there would be no question that I'd hire her.

The reason you asked the question answered it! Yes!! Conctact your local YM-YWCA for courses to help you. Local Hospitals and Community Colleges also offer courses (with Certification) to show yourself and others that you know what you are doing, aside from the diaper changing, hugging, etc. Good Luck.
