I am not sure how efficient burning is.. But I have heard that it works - as long as the stump is not wet. To burn it out, just drill a good number of holes into the stump (I would probably use a quarter inch bit) - and then fill with diesel fuel. After allowing the stump to soak up the diesel - use caution and light.
The best method (in my opinion) however, would be to use a stump grinder. You can rent one at virtually any home improvement store for about 50 bucks - and it will only take you an hour or so to complete. Plus - it's a little better on the environment.

Burning Tree Stumps

You can try to burn it out by building a fire around it, and keep it small and concentrated on the stump. If the stump was freshly cut, it probably won't work, as there will be lots of moisture in the wood still, and it won't burn well.

Or you can try this instead. I cut the stump down as low to the ground as reasonably possible, then used a chainsaw to cut parallel grooves in the stump, all the way across from one side to the other. Then I turned 90 degrees, and did it again. Then I turned 45 degrees, and did it again, and turned 90 degrees one more time. I ended up with a stump with lots of grooves, obviously.

This had 2 positive effects: First - the grooves held water, which helped it to rot out faster. Second, if the lawn mower blade hit the stump, it wouldn't have the whole solid block of wood stopping it, only a relatively small piece that was maybe an inch square at the most. That's a lot easier on a mower engine and drive system.

I've found that doing this will let the stump rot out and disappear years faster than letting it rot on its own.

bore a large hole in the center, as deep and big as you can. pour a fuel oil, don't use gasoline, and allow to soak in. light it an watch it burn.

at this point you can apply compressed air to accelerate the burn. using a air compressor, hose, a blower attachment and a length of pipe you can direct air at the fire. really speeds the process.

Did this once when i hit a buried stump while digging for a deck post. burned a wet 16" dia stump in about two hours.

I've done this...build a pyramid of charcoal on top of the ground-level stump and ignite, just as you would if you were having a cookout.

The intense temperature of the coals will ignite the stump and it will smolder for 2-3 days, burning well into the ground.

YOU CAN POUR DISIEL ON IT, LET IT SOAK IN AND THEN LIGHT IT, BUT IT PROBABLY WON'T KILL THE ROOTS. THE ONLY WAY TO GET RID OF A STUMP COMPLETELY IS TO USE A STUMP GRINDER. YOU CAN HIRE SOMEONE OR RENT ONE AND DO IT YOURSELF.

put some sugar on it to attract carpenter ants. they will chew the stump to dust. not a good idea if you have a wood house nearby

You know whats lots of fun?????? They have low grade dynamite at some hardware stores for blowing the damn thing up. A less entertaining method is this chemical stuff also sold at the hardware stores that just eats away at it and it decomposes. Hope that helps
