I want to build a deck on the back of the house. It will be about 30" from the ground. I've thought about wooden piers and cinder block piers.
In addition I have ideas about something beneath the deck to prevent weeds from growing there.

round concrete footings up to ground level. then 4x4's from there up to the deck. try landscape fabric covered with some nice looking stone on top of that

Hi there! At lowe's and home depot, you can get this stuff called landscape fabric. It comes in big rolls and it's laid out on the ground. It allows water to go through it, but prevents weeds and grass from growing. Hope that helps!

you need to take your piers down to below the frost level. in ohio that is about 36" below grade. in your area it may be different.

as for weeds, i'd use the weed fabric already mentioned, OR a sheet of plastic, and cover it with about an inch of stone about the size of golf balls, here they call they #57 river washed gravel. it holds the fabric/plastic and helps keep rodents and pest out of soil under deck

black fabric is good, a 12' roll is better. if you set your board tight together they will swrink 1/4 " & this is good as not to let enough sun in to allow growth ( ie... add nothing )
