Don't rush to sell your HD-DVD player yet.
The format will be won by the format that wins the PC marketplace, and believe me Microsoft makes it 10 times easier to put an HD-DVD drive in a new PC than a Blu-ray
(less royalties, supported software, etc.)
Eventually, both formats will coexist until (5 years from now?) nobody will care about discs any more, since all movies will be downloadable or streamed directly to your TV.

I will ask a Question before I respond to your Question.
Do you remember BataMax by Sony. Very few people can remember Sony's Blunder.
VHS, Every one remembers. The World Industrial Standard for "Tapes"
Blu-Ray 'May or may Not be Better', However, It is much more Expensive and the Disks are Outrageous in Price. There are a very limiter number of 'Titles' now available for Blu-Ray. The 'Only Full Supporter of Blu-Ray' is "SONY". Lg and a 'Few Other' DVD Drive manufactures are planing to make a drive supporting HD and Blu-Ray in the future, But no Blu-Ray only drives.
HD TV is becoming the new ' TV Standard ' for the USA.
If on your TV has a " TV / AV " setting, you DO have HD capability now.
Check this link for HD info.

This link supports Blu-Ray .

My answer is simple. I do not want it.
Good Luck in your decision.

Yes no body know who will win the competition. Only time can tell about this.
But let me gives you some input why your friend said HD-DVD has no future.
Blue Ray performance is far better than the HD-DVD, it also support by big Hollywood films maker (Sony is strong in this section Columbia, Tris-tar, MGM, Screen gem, and other are part of Sony picture).
In games market PS3 is supporting blue ray but this is also Sony. While XBOX360 must add HD-DVD driver to be able to playback HD-DVD.
And do not forget the Blue Ray format is not support by Sony alone.
The weakness of blue ray is that the price is high compare to HD-DVD, but who knows when it already in mass production the price will drop.

it is a matter of opinion, and the debate has not yet been settled... although I tend to believe that your friend is right, as more people will be bringing in play station 3 into there home, they are actuallay bringing in blueray disc players, blueray is capable of holding more data then hd-dvd. while the xbox is capable of playing hd-dvds an addon is needed to be purchaced for this functionallaty, so baised on previous sales records of playstation.. .millions of people will own blueray capable playstations by the end of the year, and I belive that that fact alone will help to strengthen the market for blueray...
then again.. i was alittle young to recall betamax vs vhs from what ive heard on the subject was betamax was the better format, vhs just was marketed better, and was lower in cost.. so, we are still waiting to see what format will go the way of the laser disc, and which format will become the next DVD... personallay I think all hard copys of media are going to become obsolete in the not so distant future.. I envision everything going to digital media storage devices, such as DVRs and the like,,,
