Why is it unlikely that you would find garden slugs or land snails in a desert.

Because they need more water than a desert can provide.

Those creatures depend on a certain amount of moisture for their continued function, dry desert air would dry them out and kill them.

For fun, pour hot dry sand, or better yet salt, on a slug and see what happens.

because thats not where the food that they eat is- just cactus and such, the slugs feed on plant and vegetable leaves, and also, they are not camels and there is not enough eater in the desert

you couldn't find any amount of water nor moisture in dessert,
slugs and snails only can survive where enough water and moisture is present...
