Best regards is usually good for all occasions.

If it's very formal, the most correct to use is probably just "regards".
This is what I have as my default signature on my email, and use it to sign off on all correspondence. I am an executive assistant, so I have to be very professional at all times (3 piece suit to work, yay!), and it's what I have always been taught is best to use in an unfamiliar business situation.

Gramatically, "best regards" doesn't really fit - "kind regards" is a bit better, but it's a little too friendly for something that is technically business. Unless of course it's a contact that you are always corresponding with, in which case "kind regards" or "thanks" would be fine.

Ah, English! Even for its users, it's eternally complicated!!

Peace out,
Mary

That's how I sign...just kidding. Sincerely is the most widely accepted in my opinion.

I always end with "Kind regards" or just plain "Best".
