An alliance is an agreement between two or more parties, made in order to advance common goals and to secure common interests.
We have alliances between countries, between families (usually by marriage),between church and state, etc, etc.

like when in WWI England agreed to help France if Germany attacked them.
They keep peace but when war breaks out, everyone is involved.
