How do you handle a boss like that? Find a new boss.
Now, what you could do is request the possibility of flex time, or switch your hours to something such as 9-6. Offer to voluntarily give up your lunch hour and work 9-5, down a sandwich on a 15 minute break. It's up to your boss whether to accept that or not.
The simple fact is, if you're paid to be there from 8-5, you are to be there from 8-5. If your employer started cutting out 1/8th your pay for coming in at 9, would you be there at 8 more often?

Get there on time, some people are as*holes about that, they never see you leaving 10 minutes late to go home, just 24 seconds late getting there. It's the same way where I work, I've been good lately but, I know how you feel, it sux being there. You can rob 37 banks during the work day where I work, nobody can say %$*# about it, just don't get "Popped" being a minute late in the morning, I almost always come in with my tail hook down, at the strike of 8 am, just leave the house 15 mins early, "NEW START" TIME, and get a cup of coffee before work, give it two weeks, something will explode or something to take the attention off of you, "Give him NO bullets, if you give him a bullet (being late) he'll shoot you, don't let him shoot you.

Ok you just said it..You're suppose to be at work at 8:00 Am NOT 8:30 AM and your not everybody else...he is probably already looking to replace you (and it doesn't matter how long you have been there) They will end up hiring someone else who can be on time and for a cheaper amount of money..So if I was you I would get to work on time or start looking for a new job...( I personally know I need my job for my family so I have to be as responsible as possible)
you have to remember at a job (if its not your own business) EVERYONE is replaceable...No matter what..
So try and be more punctual about getting to work if you can if not; better hit the job wanted ads...Nowadays employers don't play around..
Hope you can do it!

I can answer from a boss' point of view. It is extremely unprofessional to stroll in late. Especially 30min to 1hr! Your boss probably feels that you are taking advantage of fact that you are doing the extra work and you have decided on your own to come in at whatever time you want. You work for them, they don't work for you. I'm sure there are plenty of other people out there who are desperately needing a job, are just as qualified as you, and CAN COME IN ON TIME!!!

My advise is to start showing up to work on time. Take responsibility for your actions and realize that there are a lot of employers who would fire you big time for being late all the time. Regardless of how much of an assett you are to the company, remember that you are replaceable. You need to realize that you need that job. It pays your bills. Your boss has every right to be upset and nag you about your tardiness.

You get there on time, or you quit and find a job with more flexible hours. When you become the boss, you can allow your employees to "stroll in" whenever they wish - but he's the boss now and he makes the rules.
Sorry.

Here is a secret to working life.
It doesn't matter how good you are, how much you love your job, how dedicated you are to it.
NOTHING WILL GET YOU FIRED MORE SURELY THAN CONSTANTLY COMING IN LATE.
To the boss, it says you don't care, the job doesn't mean much, and office rules mean nothing, and it is a poke in his eye, everytime you come in late.
I was never a boss, but if I was, I would fire you as well.

This is your job you HAVE to arrive early, he has every right to fire you if your lateness persists. Get your butt out of bed a little earlier; this is not your fight to win. If there is a serious problem then explain it to your boss. I am sure that he will be reasonable you just have to make the effort yourself.
